Human Intestinal Epithelial Cells (IEC，人腸上皮細(xì)胞) are a layer of cells that line the luminal surface of intestinal epithelium. Stem cells located in crypts continuously produce new IECs at the base of the intestinal glands so that IECs could renew and migrate every 4-5 days.

Human Intestinal Epithelial Cells Function：

Intestinal epithelial cells play an important part in the maintenance of the symbiotic relationship between gut microbiota and the host. IECs support the food digestion, nutrient absorption, protection of organism from bacteria and toxins and coordination of appropriate immune responses etc. IECs function as a barrier through constructing mucosal barriers, secreting immunological mediators like cytokines and chemokines, and delivering bacterial antigens.
